Another fundraising success! $2095 raised for Arthritis Society

Thank you to those who helped, Jessica was able to raise $2095 for the Arthritis Society in the Walk for Arthritis this year. She was also able to spread the word that Kids get Arthritis Too! Jessica & Lindsay participated in the Walk for Arthritis on their 7th birthday, and then asked their friends who came to their birthday party later in the day to participate in a 50/50 for the gift giving. Any money that was given was 1/2 taken for them to buy gifts for themselves, and then they donated 1/2 of it to the Arthritis Society. I’m happy to report that they were each able to donate $100, for a total of $200 from their friends, in support of Jessica. Very generous, and thank you very much!

Study Identifies New Risk Factors for Dangerous Eye Complication of Juvenile Arthritis

Study Identifies New Risk Factors for Dangerous Eye Complication of Juvenile
Arthritis

By Jennifer Davis

6/21/10 Researchers say more children with arthritis than previously recognized may be at high risk for a devastating eye condition called uveitis, which causes blindness in up to 45 percent of cases.

Their study, which was published in the June issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, has the potential to change eye-screening recommendations for kids with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, or JIA, who often get uveitis as a complication of their disease. more…

Medical Breakthrough Allows Patients to ‘Regrow Knee’

Medical Breakthrough Allows Patients to ‘Regrow Knee
“The revolutionary procedure, developed at Birmingham’s Good Hope Hospital, could give injured athletes, arthritis sufferers and young patients a change to repair damaged knee caps without painful — and often career-ending — knee replacements.

“It is quite an expensive procedure, so this is aimed at younger patients or traumatic sports injuries at the moment,” orthopedic surgeon Ashvin Pimpalnerker said. “Cells are impregnated onto a graft where they grow, and the cartilage is replaced like for like when put back in.” more…

Leflunomide is an alternative to JRA Methotrexate

I had often wondered if we go straight to a biologic if Methotrexate did not work, here is what I found out…

Leflunomide is an alternative oral medication for patients intolerant of methotrexate or in whom methotrexate is not effective or in patients who initially responded to methotrexate but no longer respond,” lead author Dr Earl Silverman (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ONT) tells rheuma wire . “Leflunomide is an alternative to methotrexate and should be used in patients with JRA prior to going to a biologic.”

Antibody discovery ‘could cure arthritis’ – June 6, 2010

Antibody discovery ‘could cure arthritis’
June 6, 2010

“A cure for rheumatoid arthritis is a step nearer after scientists found an antibody which treats the cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms.

In a finding which offers hope to millions in severe pain, tests have shown that anti-CD4 antibodies attack the white blood cells that cause the debilitating disease without affecting other cells.

Researchers from the University of Lisbon in Portugal say the discovery is an improvement on existing treatments which do not target the source of pain, but merely mask its symptoms.” more…

Two Year old go Lyme Disease Style Target Rash – Could this be why Jessica Flared

After spending a weekend in Kananaskis and a weekend in Waterton, Alberta, my 2 year old suddenly developed a target like rash.  This rash is a sign of Lyme Disease.  Problem here, many doctors are under the understanding that there is not Lyme Disease in Alberta.  I was easily able to find articles indicating that it IS in Alberta (I will list later).

If you have this type of rash, contact www.canlyme.com they are great support and give you the information that you need in order to get treatment.  Early diagnosis and treatment are the only way to not deal with possibily a life long battle with issues caused by this infection.

Large Target type Lyme Disease Rash

She also had 2 other small target rashes, which can happen as well.  This is what they looked like.

Small Target Rash - Possible Lyme Disease

Small Target Rash - Possible Lyme Disease

So Why am I putting this on an Arthritis Site?  Well, Jessica flared 2 weeks before my baby got this rash.  Arthritis Flares, especially water on the knee are highly linked to Lyme Disease where there is Lyme around.  Could she have gotten bit too?  Probably a far fetched idea, but due to my other daughters possible bite, we are having her treated for it as well.  We will keep a log to see if the antibiotics work at helping her flares.

Here is the research on Lyme Arthritis.
